Press Release – Gary Taxali debut solo exhibition at The Outsiders May 3/12

GARY TAXALI | “MY FEELINGS LIKE YOU”
SOLO EXHIBITION AT THE OUTSIDERS @ EXCLUSIVE VIP PREVIEW THURS MAY 3RD 6 to 9 pm

Award winning artist Gary Taxali debuts his first UK solo show, “My Feelings Like You” at The Outsiders run by Steve Lazarides.  The show runs from May 4th to June 2nd, 2012 with an exclusive invite-only private preview on Thursday May 3rd from 6 to 9 pm.

Gary’s trademark style posseses a nostalgic feel with a modern sensibility traditionally described as pop art but is actually a reinvention and reimagination of pop art blending low brow with fine art.   Gary is influenced by art, typography,  iconography and popular culture from the 1930s.

Gary uses oils and a variety of techniques including screenprinting,  drawings, inks, pencil, stamps, etchings, marks and various unlikely surfaces such as old books covers and other canvases that are “accidentally beautiful”.   In My Feelings Like You, Gary will be including one of his largest pieces at 152 x 203 cm.

Gary released two art monographs entitled, I Love You, Ok?” published by teNeues and Mono Taxali published by 27_9 in Fall 2011.   This year, Gary collaborated with the Royal Canadian Mint to release a set of six gift coins set for birthday, wedding, O Canada, new baby, tooth fairy and holiday (to be released later this year).  You can see them here and on the Royal Canadian Mint’s website.     Gary was also appointed to the Stamp Advisory Committee for Canada Post commencing January 2012 for a three year term.

“One of those rare artists whose work is immediately inviting and familiar, yet idiosyncratic and unmistakable.” – Shepard Fairey

“Gary Taxali visually blends now with then.  His style is repurposes with the goal of communicating the ironies and comical essence of popular culture.  His work is at once alluring and endearing.  Aesthetically the work oozes nostalgic charm, but more vitally it offers hearfelt succour for the average ent and women of the 21st century.” – Steve Heller (former art critic, NY Times)

“C
ooler-than-cool … his voluminous and multifaceted output as instantly recognizable as that of Keith Haring.” – The Globe and Mail
